Amid Roger Goodell’s Silence, Eagles’ Controversial ‘Tush Push’ Finally Becomes NFL’s Health-and-Safety Agenda

Roger Goodell’s stance on the controversial Tush Push move is receiving mixed reactions. The Philadelphia Eagles’ move that allowed them to score at least a yard may be banned from the league. The league commissioner, Rodger Goodell, hinted at the potential ban, further emphasizing the players’ safety concerning this move. 

In the recent events, it was disclosed that the committee will discuss several moves in the league’s meeting. Moves that pose a high risk of injuries can be banned, and Tush Push can be one of them.

Roger Goodell’s approach toward the Tush Push move

NFL journalist Albert Breer took to Twitter to share about the NFL meeting to discuss health and safety agendas. Specifically, three moves will be discussed: Hip-drop tackles, Split-flow block, and Push play. The idea is to assess health and safety measures related to these tackles.

Breer wrote: “Health-and-safety is on tomorrow morning’s agenda at the NFL meetings. Three specific plays will be discussed. Those three are hip-drop tackles, Split-flow block, Push play. It’s the first time, I believe, the Brotherly Shove has been a health-and-safety agenda item.”

Earlier, Goodell emphasized the risk factors related to the Tush Push move. He further highlighted his desire to ban this move from the league.

Controversial Tush Push move

The Tush Push move has mainly been used by the Philadelphia Eagles. In this move, teammates “push” quarterback Jalen Hurts from behind during a quarterback sneak. The Eagles used this play in several games, and this play always safeguards a yard for the team. However, the Eagles are among the top contenders with 10 victories and three defeats, making them a dominating force in the 2023 NFL season.

However, Roger Goodell does not admire their popular Tush Push move. The league’s committee of owners, general managers, and coaches emphasized banning the play in the 2023 offseason, and discussions will probably resume in 2024.
