Os 10 principais aspectos do comércio de 49ers Emmanuel Sanders – The Mercury News

SANTA CLARA – Let’s break down what wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders’ trade Tuesday to the 49ers means on several fronts:

1. POSITION UPGRADE

The more Sanders plays, who plays less? I’d imagine Dante Pettis, who’s caught 9-of-17 targets and failed to break up two interceptions while playing 53.5 percent of the snaps.

Deebo Samuel has a groin injury that kept him out last game, and now he can be eased back into action. Jordan Matthews, with just three snaps Sunday, figures to be released unless Samuel is hurt worse than we know.

Marquise Goodwin (16.5 yards per catch, 55 percent of snaps) could also be more of a situational deep threat. Sanders should attract defense’s and take the weight off tight end George Kittle’s capable shoulders. The 49ers, ideally, might thrive with a three-receiver set of Sanders, Goodwin and, once healthy next month, Trent Taylor. Kendrick Bourne and Richie James Jr. are nice complements in the rotation.

2. SANDERS’ HEALTH

Sanders is making an impressive comeback from an Achilles tear last December. His trade is contingent on passing the 49ers’ physical exam.

He’s proven capable of handling a heavy workload. He played 77 percent of the Broncos’ snaps, about normal for his career. Coach Kyle Shanahan has preferred rotating receivers, but he hasn’t had one as heralded as Sanders.

3. GAROPPOLO FRIENDLY

Sanders probably can earn Garoppolo’s trust quickly. Although he’s played with only two teams and two potential Hall of Famers, Sanders has had to adjust to a bevy of new passers in recent years.

He’s caught touchdown passes from seven QBs: Peyton Manning (13), Ben Roethlisberger (11), Trevor Siemian (6), Case Keenum (4), Brock Osweiler (2), Joe Flacco (2) and Paxton Lynch (1). (Sanders also has one career touchdown pass, last year to Courtland Sutton.)

Garoppolo, like any quarterback, appreciates veteran know-how in terms of route running and aggressiveness, the latter of which is needed while Garoppolo’s improves his accuracy.

4. PLAYBOOK READY

Helping school up Sanders will be 49ers wide receivers coach Wes Welker, who played with Sanders on the 2014 Broncos.

General manager John Lynch, in his statement, predicted a “quick transition” for Sanders. That’s because the Broncos installed a 49ers-esque offense this year under Rich Scangarello, their first-year coordinator and former 49ers QB coach. “Just talking to Rich, he was telling me it’s the same offense, different concepts, but I’ll be able to pick it up easy,” Sanders told reporters as he left Broncos HQ.

5. PRO ACCOLADES

Sanders earned Pro Bowl honors in the 2014 and 2016 seasons. He’s gone to two Super Bowls: losing with the 2010 Steelers (2 catches, 17 yards vs. the Packers) and winning with the 2015 Broncos (six catches, 83 yards vs. the Panthers, at Levi’s Stadium).

Career receiving stats: 565 catches, 7,391 yards, 39 touchdowns.

A year ago in Week 7, Sanders won AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors for producing a 64-yard touchdown catch, a 28-yard touchdown pass and six receptions for 102 yards in a 45-10 rout of Arizona.

6. CONTRACT STATUS

Sanders, 32, is in the final year of his contract. The 49ers will have to cover the remaining $6 million of his salary. A 2010 third-round pick by Pittsburgh, he joined Denver in 2014 (three years, $15 million) and got extended in 2016 (three years, $33 million). If he leaves in free agency, the 49ers could receive a compensatory draft pick. Other pending free agents: Arik Armstead, Jimmie Ward, Ronald Blair, Matt Breida (restricted), Bourne (restricted) and Nick Mullens (exclusive rights)

7. DRAFT FALLOUT

Essentially, the 49ers coughed up their 2020 third-round draft pick, plus whatever the difference is between moving down to the Broncos’ fifth-round slot (likely high) while Denver takes the 49ers’ fourth-round pick (likely low).

The 49ers already were without a 2020 second-round pick, which Kansas City gained in the Dee Ford trade. They do have an extra seventh-round slot from sending Eli Harold to the Detroit Lions last year.

8. SANDERS’ BIO

His 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame is almost the prototype of what Shanahan has employed on the 49ers. Sanders is a native of Bellville, Texas (population: 3,794; located 69 miles west of Houston). He set Southern Methodist University’s major receiving records. He and his wife, Gabriella, have two children.

9. ELWAY-LYNCH HISTORY

Lynch, 48, considers Broncos general manager John Elway, 59, one of his closest friends, and this isn’t their first deal since Lynch assumed his 49ers post in 2017. Running back Kapri Bibbs came to the 49ers in May 2017, linebacker Dekoda Watson went to the Broncos in April 2019, and before all that, the biggest move was Elway letting Adam Peters leave Denver in 2017 to become Lynch’s right-hand man and vice president of player personnel.

Lynch followed Elway’s path from Southern California to Stanford as a quarterback and baseball prospect, and Elway introduced Lynch to the NFL’s personnel side as a Broncos consultant.

10. THIS AND THAT

Sanders has a perfect, 158.3 passer rating (2-of-2, 1 TD). … He’s committed 11 career fumbles. … He rushed last year for a career-high 53 yards and one touchdown (four carries). … He averaged 12.4 yards on 34 receptions while appearing in the playoffs in 2010, ’11, ’14 and ’15. … He’s returned 45 kickoffs (24.1-yard average) and 36 punts (8.0-yard average) but none for touchdowns.
